Upcoming in the next week and a half, we will be hosting our Summer Recital for 2018.
At Three Little Birds Piano Studio, I like to encourage participation in the bi-annual recitals. It is not required, as it can sometimes cause too much anxiety for beginners. But it can be so fun for students to be able to show off their hard earned skills.
Mainly, each student chooses, with my guidance, the song or songs they will perform. I like to balance their choices between something they really love and something that will teach them a new aspect of playing the piano.
The recital usually lasts about 30 minutes. I welcome all the friends and family and give a brief overview of the previous months. The order is determined by ability level, so that the more beginning students aren't intimidated by the more experienced performers.
In the past, I would simply introduce each student as they come up to the piano. But this year, I'm planning to print up programs, to streamline the process, but also to give the audience a chance to write feedback to each of the students. Once I receive all the feedback, I'll relay the comments to the students.
It is such a nerve-wracking and rewarding experience!
And the final thing...we celebrate the performers by enjoying a reception. Sometimes we have a theme, like christmas cookies and hot chocolate for the recital at Christmas. This recital, I plan on making a piano cake and serving punch.
Overall, it is an exciting time to share music together and leads us into a short break, either Summer break or Christmas break.
